Lifestyle Store and Loft in SoHo, NYC

“The Apartment”

life as art and shopping

Sneak a peek into your NYC neighbor’s loft. This highly conceptual lifestyle store where everything was actually for sale was designed to look like a residence in use. Breakfast leftovers, slept-in bed, and nightly domestic scenes carried out by actors hired to live in the space completed the life as art approach.

Legend was that the space housed Jean Michel Basquiat’s painting studio – other parts included illegal apartments and a fishmonger’s shop. Design innovations included a stairwell lined with aluminum foam panels – typically used in airplane shells and truck doors as thermal absorbers; cast glass stair treads (pre-Apple stores); and a nature-inspired spa-like wet room to serve as a bathroom, created by filling a pitched floor with river stones to tickle your toes. Lynn envisioned a unique grid and panel system to allow the space to transform as needed. The panels instantly change the space from an open loft plan to many rooms.

Project details: Vertical loft combination, total 4000 sq. ft. Gut renovation including full HVAC, full interior design, and décor (for BF Architects).
